Definition · Direct Answer
What Is a Revit Quantity Takeoff?
A Revit quantity takeoff is the process of extracting precise material and component quantities directly from an Autodesk Revit BIM model using the model's built-in schedule functionality and element parameters. Every element in a Revit model — walls, slabs, beams, ducts, pipes, conduits, doors, windows — carries embedded data including its dimensions, area, volume, material, and count. A Revit quantity takeoff reads this embedded data automatically and organizes it into a structured Bill of Quantities (BOQ) or material schedule, ready for cost estimation, procurement, or subcontractor bidding. Unlike manual 2D takeoffs that require an estimator to scale every dimension from a PDF drawing by hand, a Revit takeoff reads quantities that the model already has — producing a complete BOQ in hours, not days.

The power of Revit quantity takeoff lies in a simple fact: your design team has already measured everything when they built the model. Every wall your architect modeled is already tagged with its exact area. Every beam your structural engineer placed already knows its size and weight. Every duct run your MEP engineer routed already knows its length and diameter. A Revit quantity takeoff captures all of that embedded data — organizing it by discipline, element type, and material — into a usable BOQ without any additional measurement work.

CES provides Revit quantity takeoff services for all three primary disciplines — architectural, structural, and MEP — from Revit models at any Level of Development (LOD). We extract quantities from model schedules, element parameters, and exported data using industry-standard Revit tools, organize output by CSI MasterFormat division, and deliver a complete BOQ in Excel and PDF within 24 to 48 hours. Every quantity is traceable back to its source element in the model — you can verify any line item by checking the corresponding model element directly.

Why Revit Takeoff

Revit Takeoff vs
Manual 2D Takeoff

Manual 2D Takeoff
Manual scaling — estimator measures every dimension from PDF drawings by hand
20–60 hours for a full commercial project BOQ — high labor cost and time
Human error — missed items, wrong scale, overlapping measurements cause mistakes
Redone from scratch when design changes — new revision = full re-measure
Paper-based trail — hard to audit specific quantities or trace errors
2D limitation — complex curved geometry and 3D intersections often missed
Discipline silos — architectural, structural, MEP done separately with no coordination
Revit Quantity Takeoff
Model-extracted — quantities read directly from Revit element parameters, zero manual scaling
4–12 hours for a full commercial project BOQ — 50–70% time reduction
Design-intent accuracy — quantities reflect exactly what was modeled, no interpretation errors
Instant updates — design revision means re-export model schedules, not re-measure everything
Element-level traceability — every BOQ line item traces back to a specific Revit element ID
Full 3D coverage — curved walls, sloped slabs, complex MEP routing all measured precisely
Coordinated output — architectural, structural, MEP from the same federated model

AR
Architects
Architects building Revit models need material quantities for specification writing, value engineering, and owner cost reporting. CES extracts architectural quantities — wall areas by material, floor areas by finish, door and window counts by specification — organized by room, level, or building phase. Stop manually counting from drawing sheets. Your Revit model has already measured everything.
Material specs · Owner reporting · Value engineering
SE
Structural Engineers
Structural engineers using Revit Structure or Tekla need concrete volumes, rebar quantities, and steel tonnages for cost validation and contractor bidding. CES extracts structural quantities from your model — concrete by pour type, rebar by bar size and weight, steel by section and length — organized by CSI division 03 and 05, ready for subcontractor procurement or GC budget review.
Concrete BOQ · Steel tonnage · Rebar schedule
MEP
MEP Engineers
MEP engineers with coordinated Revit MEP models carry the most complete quantity data of any discipline — every duct segment, pipe run, conduit length, and equipment item is already in the model. CES extracts MEP quantities organized by system — mechanical, electrical, plumbing — in the exact format contractors need for subcontractor bidding and procurement planning.
Duct LF · Pipe LF · Conduit LF · Equipment count
GC
General Contractors
GCs receiving design models from architects and engineers use CES Revit takeoff to extract quantities for subcontractor bid packages faster than any manual takeoff process. Design-build GCs building their own Revit models get instant BOQ updates as design develops — no re-measuring, just re-exporting from the updated model. GCs pricing GMP contracts use Revit BOQ to verify design quantities against contractor bids.
Sub bid packages · GMP verification · Design-build
PC
Procurement Teams
Material procurement managers need accurate quantities by material type, specification, and delivery phase before purchase orders are issued. A Revit BOQ organized by material and specification — brick by color and coursing, steel by section and grade, pipe by diameter and material — is the most accurate procurement document available. CES delivers procurement-ready BOQ organized exactly to your purchasing workflow.
Purchase orders · Material scheduling · Procurement
DV
Developers & Owners
Developers commissioning BIM models from design teams use Revit BOQ to independently verify quantities before locking in construction contracts. When a GC says they need 400 tons of structural steel for a project, a Revit takeoff from the structural model confirms or challenges that number — protecting the developer's budget and construction loan from quantity-based cost inflation.

FAQ

Revit Quantity Takeoff
Questions Answered

What is a Revit quantity takeoff?+
A Revit quantity takeoff is the process of extracting precise material quantities directly from an Autodesk Revit BIM model using the model's built-in schedule and parameter tools. Every element in a Revit model - walls, slabs, beams, ducts, pipes, conduits - carries embedded data including its area, volume, length, weight, and material specification. CES extracts this embedded data automatically and organizes it into a complete Bill of Quantities (BOQ) by CSI division, ready for cost estimation or procurement.
How does Revit extract quantities?+
Revit stores quantity data in element parameters - every wall has a "Area" parameter that calculates its face area automatically, every beam has a "Volume" and calculated weight, every pipe has a "Length" parameter. CES uses Revit's Schedule feature to create element schedules that pull these parameters into a structured table, then exports to Excel. We also use Revit's built-in Material Takeoff schedule type for material-by-material quantity reports. The result is a complete BOQ where every number comes from the model geometry, not from manual measurement.
How accurate is a Revit quantity takeoff?+
Revit quantity takeoff accuracy depends on model LOD and element completeness. At LOD 300 - fully developed geometry with material specifications - Revit takeoffs achieve ±5-10% accuracy compared to final construction quantities. At LOD 400 - fabrication-level detail - accuracy improves to ±2-5%. CES documents the accuracy level for every takeoff and flags any model elements that are incomplete or missing specification data that would affect quantity accuracy.
Can you take off quantities from an IFC file?+
Yes. CES accepts IFC files from any BIM platform - ArchiCAD, Tekla, Bentley, or any software that exports to the IFC standard. IFC files contain the same element parameter data as native Revit files - walls, slabs, beams, and MEP systems all carry their geometry and properties. We use specialized IFC reader tools to extract quantities from IFC exports with the same accuracy as native Revit takeoffs.
What if my Revit model is not complete?+
Incomplete models produce incomplete BOQs - and CES documents every gap. We deliver a Model Gap Report with every takeoff that clearly identifies which elements are missing specification data, which areas appear under-modeled compared to the design intent visible in drawings, and which parameters need to be completed for a fully accurate BOQ. You get a clear picture of model completeness alongside your quantity report.
How long does a Revit takeoff take?+
CES delivers Revit quantity takeoffs within 24 to 48 hours. Single-discipline takeoffs (architectural, structural, or MEP only) typically deliver in 24 hours. Full multi-discipline BOQs for large commercial projects take up to 48 hours. Rush 24-hour delivery is available for all disciplines at a 20 percent premium. Exact delivery time confirmed when we provide your fixed quote after assessing your model.
What is the difference between a BOQ and a material takeoff?+
A Bill of Quantities (BOQ) is a comprehensive list of all work items in a construction project, organized by CSI division, including quantities, units, and sometimes pricing - used for competitive bidding and contract administration. A material takeoff (MTO) focuses specifically on material quantities by type and specification - used for procurement and purchasing. CES provides both from your Revit model - a full BOQ for bidding and a material schedule organized by specification for procurement.
Is my Revit model confidential?+
Absolutely. We sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement before opening any Revit file - every client, every project, without exception. Your model contains your design intent, proprietary details, structural calculations, and client information. All of that is completely protected. Your model files are never shared, distributed, or used for any purpose other than producing your BOQ.
